Google testing the holy grail of keyword research tools?

By archive March 8, 2007

It’s always been frustrating having to explain to prospective clients considering an SEM campaign that I can’t tell them the EXACT number of searches conducted on Google for a specific keyword (at least before we launch a campaign.) Google has always considered the specific volume for individual keywords a closely-guarded secret. Only in the last year or so have they finally made their more general Keyword Tool somewhat useful again by adding relative volume data (i.e., volume on a scale of 1-5.)

As a result, we’ve always had to conduct keyword research on a number of sources to get a good feel for the true keyword volume and competition that’s really out there. Some tools are better than others, but nothing is as good as the data straight from the horse’s mouth.

But now Google appears to finally be testing the possibility of a more open-door policy. While it didn’t show up when I was conducting my own keyword research this morning, apparently it did show up for at least one person. I just hope it really was a test and not a mistake.
